Review: 10/08/12 Rescinds: 08/25/06 Amends: Accreditation Standards: Subject: Inspections This order consists of the following: 1. Purpose 2. Policy 3. Definitions 4. Procedure 1. Purpose To establish inspection guidelines to inform the Sheriff and staff of agency effectiveness, adherence to policy, and the identification of needs. 2. Policy Agency inspections will follow the prescribed procedures. 3. Definitions A. Follow-up Inspection(s) – A re-evaluation of irregularities and deficiencies observed in areas in the informal or formal line inspection. B. Formal Line Inspections – Inspections that are conducted to specifically account for Sheriff’s Office property and assess member appearance. Formal line inspections are documented on an Inspection Form (SO-05-96). C. Informal Line Inspection(s) – Informal line inspections will be routine at each level of command. Supervisors will use these inspections to determine whether members in their command maintain a working knowledge of the law and perform their duties in accordance with agency policies. Inspections performed by supervisory members during routine operations do not usually require completing an Inspection Form (SO-05- 96). Deficiencies will be corrected immediately. 4. Procedure Line Inspections A. Division Captains are responsible for ensuring Informal and Formal Line Inspections are conducted of members, and areas, under their command, and if needed, Follow-Up Inspections. Page 1 of 2 220.0 B. Line supervisors who have direct authority and responsibility for the operation of a specific component or function will conduct Informal and Formal Line Inspections. 1. Supervisors will monitor the activities of subordinates to determine duties, services, orders, and instructions are promptly, efficiently, and effectively performed. 2. Supervisors shall make routine Informal Line Inspections of subordinates to ensure they are properly attired and equipped. 3. Supervisors shall conduct a Follow-Up Inspection if any deficiencies were discovered during the Informal or Formal Line Inspection. C. Informal Line Inspections will be routine at each level of command. Informal Line Inspections performed during routine operations do not require an Inspection Form (SO- 05-96) to be completed. Any deficiencies found during an Informal Line Inspection will be immediately corrected, if possible. A Follow-Up Inspection may be required to ensure any deficiency was corrected. D. Formal Line Inspections will be conducted semi-annually (January and July) of each year. The Formal Line Inspections will include those areas identified on the Inspection Form (SO-05-96), but may also include areas not listed on the form (i.e., shield(s), other less-lethal weapons, entry tools, etc.). Supervisors shall document the Formal Line Inspection on an Inspection Form (SO-05-96). E. Completed Inspection Forms shall be sent through the chain of command to the Division Captain for review and returned to the member’s Supervisor for filing. The Division Captain is responsible for overseeing corrective action and proper retraining of members with noted deficiencies. F. Follow-Up Inspections of deficiencies shall be conducted within seven (7) calendar days. Page 2 of 2
