BED MAKING MISS: MINAL DAMBHARE NURSING TUTOR LEARNING OBJECTIVES GENERAL OBJECTIVES:- At the end of the lecture the first year students will be able to gain knowledge. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:- Define the bed making. Explain the types of bed. Explain the principles of bed making. “It is a procedure of making neat and clean DEFINITION bed for the client in hospital” PURPOSE:- To provide comfort and to promote rest. To maintain a clean environment and neat appearance to the unit. To reduce transmission of micro organisms. To economize time, material and effort. To promote cleanliness. To observe patient and to prevent complication. To ambulate the patient. To provide smooth and wrinkle free bed thus minimizing sources of skin irritation. To help the relatives to learn care for sick at home To provide the relatives to learn care for sick at home Types of bed Closed bed Open bed Admission bed Occupied bed Operation bed Cardiac bed Fracture bed Amputation bed Blanket bed PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN BED MAKING 1) Micro organisms are found everywhere on the skin on the article used by the patient and in the environment. The nurses to take are the prevent the transference of micro organisms from the source to the new host by direct or indirect contact or prevent the multiplication of micro-organisms 2) A safe and comfortable bed will ensure rest, sleep and prevent several complication in bedridden patient eg bed sore, foot drop etc PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN BED MAKING 3) Good body mechanics maintains the body alignment and prevents fatigue. 4) Systematic ways of functioning save time, energy and material. PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN BED MAKING 1. PRINCIPLES Micro organisms are found everywhere on the skin on the article used by the patient and in the environment. The nurses to take are the prevent the transference of micro organisms from the source to the new host by direct or indirect contact or prevent the multiplication of micro- organisms. ACTION - 1.The nurse washes her hands before and after bed making to protect the patient and herself from cross infection. 2.Bed clothes are changed frequently to ensure cleanliness. 3. While removing the bed linen, care should to be taken not to taken not to drop them on the floor. 4. Shake the linen gently to remove the dust. 5. linen should be folded and held away from the nurse to prevent direct contact with the micro organisms. 6. Dusting and through cleaning of the patients bed and unit daily. 7. Dry dusting raises dust.Damp dusting is recommended. 8. The nurse keeps a reasonable distance from the patient face to prevent droplet infection. 9. Minimize the spread of organisms to the clean area eg clean the bed first before cleaning the bed side locker 10. The linen removed from the isolation unit are disinfected first before they are sent to laundry. 11. Nurses suffering from respiratory infection should not attend patient. 2. PRINCIPLES A safe and comfortable bed will ensure rest, sleep and prevent several complication in bedridden patient eg bed sore, foot drop etc ACTION 1. The body exerts uneven pressure against the mattress. The pressure is greater over the bony prominence. Lumps and creases in the bed can cause bed sore due to friction between the skin and mattress or wrinkled sheets. 2. Pull the bottom sheet lightly, so that there no wrinkles 3. The linen is tucked enough under the mattress, keep it fixed, tight and smooth. 4. While tightening the sheets, do not alter the shape of the mattress. The mattress should remain flat and even with the corner firm and square. 5.If lumps are present in mattress due to collection of cotton in any area, it should be removed before making the bed. 6. No wet linen should remain on bed. 7. If the patient is in bed for a long time, tight upper bedding may cause foot drop. Any one of the several measures may be used to prevent the bed linen tight over the foot. 8. While tucking the upper bedding, ask the patient to flex his knees. 9. Comfort devices are used to provide additional comfort to the patient. 3. PRINCIPLES Good body mechanics maintains the body alignment and prevents fatigue. ACTION 1) The stability of the body is assured by keeping its centre of gravity over its base. In standing position, the nurse can have a wide base by separating her feet. 2) The nearer to the centre of gravity weight is held, the less is the strain produced. 3) While tucking, the sheets under the mattress flexing is done by knees and hips. This position shifts the work to the long and strong muscles of the thighs and keeps the back in good alignment. This reduces strain on the back. 4) While placing the linen on the bed and tucking them under the mattress, face the direction of the work and move with the work rather than twisting. 4.PRINCIPLS Systematic ways of functioning save time, energy and material. ACTION 1) Assemble all articles and arrange them conveniently before starting the bed making. 2) Arrange the linen in the reverse order of use. 3) Finish one side of bed before going to opposite side. 4) While stripping the bed, remove the bed linen one by one. 5) The bed sheets are folded in such a way that it can be replaced easily. GENERAL INSTRUCTION FOR BED MAKING Wash hands before and after the procedure. Do not expose the patient unnecessarily. Protect the patient from draught. Do not mix clean linen with soiled linen. Shake the linen gently. Maintain good body mechanics. Do not let the linen touch your body or uniform.
