[Embalming Protocols] [Part One] Age Considerations Autopsied Cases Organ-Tissue Donation Cases Module: MSE 017 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS MODULE: Upon satisfactory completion of this module, from the Mortuary Science curriculum, the student shall be able: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EMBALMING PROTOCOLS =================== AS THEY RELATE TO AGE ===================== INTRODUCTION: At the end of an earlier component entitled: *'Essentials & History of Embalming'* you received suggested guidelines for the embalming of an autopsied case and a non-autopsied case. It is strongly suggested that you read the applicable guidelines in conjunction with this component. When you first covered the subject of Embalming Analyses you came to understand that AGE is an important factor to consider throughout all three analyses; Preembalming, Concurrent and Terminal. However it is the Preembalming Analysis that equates more to age than the other time periods of analysis. If age is to be taken seriously within the context of your preembalming analysis, then age must be further divided into specific classifications. CLASSIFICATIONS ACCORDING TO AGE: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GENERAL INFORMATION CONCERNING INFANTS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CLASSIFICATIONS OF INFANT / CHILD CASES: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **INFANT EMBALMING --** **PROTOCOL GUIDELINES** **OVERVIEW AND SPECIALISED INFORMATION:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **NON-AUTOPSIED INFANTS -- BLOOD VESSEL SELECTION & OTHER PROTOCOLS:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **AUTOPSIED INFANTS -- BLOOD VESSEL SELECTION & OTHER PROTOCOLS:** ***GENERAL INFORMATION:*** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - \#2: Start here and suture to meet the \#1 suture cord - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - \#5: Start here\-- End \#4 suture here \#3: Start suturing from here down \#1: Start by tying the "Y" ends here End \#2 suture here - - - - **PREMATURE AND STILLBORN NON-AUTOPSY CASES:** There is no other way to explain it -- these types of cases are difficult, not only to embalm but also to present for viewing. In many instances, the tissue consistency of these cases is macerated -- so soft that form and shape are hard to define. In many cases viewing is very difficult to achieve because the final outcome will not be a *[memory picture]* that will be natural and pleasing to the family. Nevertheless when preservation is necessary for whatever reason then the following protocols would apply. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **EMBALMING OF 4 TO 12 YEAR OLD CHILD --** **PROTOCOL GUIDELINES** **SETTING OF THE FEATURES AND BODY POSITIONING OF CHILDREN:** - - - - - - - **VESSEL SELECTION -- CHILDREN:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **FLUID STRENGTHS AND VOLUME -- CHILDREN:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **PRESSURE AND RATE OF FLOW FOR INJECTION OF A CHILD:** - **EMBALMING OF AN ADOLESCENT/ADULT --** **PROTOCOL GUIDELINES** **GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:** - - **VESSEL SELECTION -- ADOLESCENT/ADULT CASES:** - - - **FLUID STRENGTH AND VOLUME -- ADOLESCENT/ADULT CASES:** - - - - - - - **PRESSURE AND RATE OF FLOW -- ADOLESCENT/ADULT CASES:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **EMBALMING THE ELDERLY** **GENERAL INFORMATION:** - - - **PROBLEMATIC CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED WITH ELDERLY CASES:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **NOTE:** - - **EMBALMING PROTOCOLS -** **SPECIFIC FOR AUTOPSY CASES** GENERAL INFORMATION: In the component you have just finished concerning protocols for infants etc. you noticed that the protocols for specific autopsy cases within those age groups were only given for the category of Infants. To keep this course from becoming too repetitious, MFE has placed autopsy cases involving the age categories of Adolescents, Adults and the Elderly all into this component. As a matter of fact, unless there are extenuating circumstances surrounding the type of autopsy performed or the general condition of the case, an autopsy involving these three age categories are very much the same. Also at the end of an earlier component entitled: *'Essentials & History of Embalming'*, you received suggested guidelines for the embalming of an autopsied case and a non-autopsied case. It is strongly suggested that you read the applicable guidelines in conjunction with this component. TYPES OF AUTOPSIES: - - - - AUTHORISATION TO PERFORM AN AUTOPSY: - - - - - - - - GENERAL EMBALMING PROTOCOLS FOR AUTOPSY CASES: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CATEGORIES OF AUTOPSIES: Categories of autopsies should not be confused with the TYPES of autopsies. - - - - - - - - SPECIFIC AUTOPSY PROTOCOLS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - \#2: Start here and suture to meet the \#1 suture cord - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - \#5: Start here\-- End \#4 suture here \#3: Start suturing from here down \#1: Start by tying the "Y" ends here End \#2 suture here - - - - DIFFERENT TYPES OF AUTOPSY EXAMINATIONS AND THEIR PROTOCOLS: When the standard autopsy examination has been altered you must literally change your protocols to coincide with those changes. The mark of a good embalming practitioner is to be able to "shift gears" making changes as he/she goes along and finish the case professionally. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EMBALMING PROTOCOLS - SPECIFIC FOR ORGAN/TISSUE DONATION CASES ============================================================== GENERAL INFORMATION: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WHAT ARE DONATED TISSUES AND ORGANS USED FOR? - [Organ/Tissue Use Organ/Tissue Use] Heart Orthotopic heart transplantation Long bones Heterotopic heart transplantation (femur, tibia, etc) Total joint revision Heart/Lung transplantation Trauma Aortic valve replacement Tumour resection Pulmonary valve replacement Tendons Research (Achilles/patellar) Anterior/posterior Liver Orthotopic liver transplantation cruciate Heterotopic liver transplantation Ligament repair Research Fascia lata Dura replacement Lung Single/double-lung transplantation Tendon, ligament, and Heart/Lung transplantation eyelid reconstruction Research Iliac crest Spinal fusion/dental Kidney Renal transplantation procedures Research Fibula Trauma Pancreas Pancreas transplantation Tumour resection Islet cell transplantation Multilevel spinal fusions Research Cartilage Nasal and Small bowel Small bowel transplantation Facial reconstruction Entire viscera of Dura Dura and Abdominopelvic Eyelid reconstruction Cavity Multivisceral transplantation Ribs Maxillofacial Saphenous vein Coronary and peripheral bypass reconstruction procedures Oral surgical procedures Arteriovenous fistula construction Skin Skin replacement (burns) Iliac artery & vein Grafts for transplantation Mandible Mandible reconstruction Eyes Corneal transplantation Intervertebral disk Disk reconstruction Sclera for trauma and Vertebral bodies Recovery of bone reconstruction marrow for bone Research marrow transplantation Temporal bone Audiology reconstruction ORGAN DONATION -- GENERAL INFORMATION AND EMBALMING PROTOCOLS: - - - - - - - - - - ![](media/image35.png) ![](media/image24.png) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EMBALMING PROTOCOLS FOR SPECIFIC ORGAN DONATION CASES: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TISSUE DONATION -- GENERAL INFORMATION AND EMBALMING PROTOCOLS: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ### OR - ### OR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
