VO2max & Endurance Performance MEDI/EXSC221 Lecture objectives Describe how VO2 max is measured and what criteria is used to determine someone’s VO2 max Describe key aerobic training adaptions that improve VO2 max Adaptations that improve: O2 delivery (central), and metabolism/extraction (Peripheral) Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of Mortality Age-adjusted mortality rates in healthy men categorized by level of fitness (Myers, 2003) Revision: How fit are you? Go online: https://www.worldfitnesslevel.org/#/start https://www.ntnu.edu/cerg/vo2max Table 7.1 Estimating VO2 max Submaximal test Heart rate (bpm) - 4 stages of submaximal exercise - Measure HR and VO2 - Use linear relationship to determine VO2 max - HR max is known (~220- age) Oxygen consumption (ml/kg/min) Linear relationship HR and VO2 (⇧ workrate) Measuring VO2 max Reading = Chapter 7 (McArdle, Katch & Katch text book). Figure 7.4 Maximal Oxygen Consumption Refers to the maximal rate O2 can be taken into the body, transported and utilised to perform work Maximal oxygen consumption is also synonymous with the following terms: Maximal oxygen uptake Maximal aerobic power V̇O2max 11 Criteria for Maximal oxygen consumption 1. Demonstrated leveling off ‘plateau’ (no greater than 100 mL/min, or 0.1 L/min) or peaking of oxygen consumption with increasing exercise intensity provides general assurance a person has reached maximal capacity for aerobic metabolism *Volitional exhaustion (request to stop ‘cannot exercise any longer’) V̇O2peak? when leveling off does not occur – likely limited by local muscular factors rather than circulatory dynamics (or motivation!) = highest VO2 level achieved Secondary criteria for VO2 peak? Age predicted max heart rate? RER>1.15? Blood lactate ~8-10mmol? 12 Discuss on Week 10 Forum Your Turn Why do we use a graded/RAMP test for VO2 max? How long should each ramp be? Why? How long should you spend at each stage? How to you decide what the starting level (speed, Watts etc) should be? How long should a VO2max test be? Why?
