Demonstrator/ Reem Amgad 01 Safety Rules Safety Rules A chemistry lab can be a dangerous place to work because there are: 1. Flammable solvents 2. Toxic and corrosive chemicals 3. Electrical equipment and delicate glassware Preparation of lab work: 1. Make sure you fully understand the experiment before starting the actual work. 2. No unauthorized experiments are to be carried out in the lab. 3. Wear sensible clothing in the lab. 4. No food or drinks or smoking is allowed in the lab. 5. Wash your hands before you leave the lab. 6. Find a storage place for your personal properties. 7. Keep the lab clean. Safety Rules Personal protective equipment (PPE): 1. Lab Coat You must wear a lab coat over your clothing at all times while working in the lab. 2. Eye protection Safety goggles must be worn from the second you walk in to the lab until the second you leave. Contact lenses are not permitted. In case you get something in your eyes, use the eye wash to rinse your eyes. 3. Gloves Type Thin latex Good handling No protection Thick rubber Bad handling High protection Nitrile Good handling High protection Safety Rules Handling Chemicals: 1. To avoid the contamination of chemical reagents never insert droppers, pipettes, or spatulas into the reagent bottles. Double check the label on the reagent bottle carefully before you remove a chemical. Pour the quantity you need of the chemical into a small container of your own. Cover the bottle and then return it. Never keep the reagent bottles at your desk. Label the compounds in each container. If you forget, discard the contents. 2. Never return unused chemicals to the reagent bottle. Water soluble chemicals → washed down the sink. Organic liquids → disposed in special containers in the hood. Solid chemicals → disposed in the trash. 3. Pour acid into water and not vice versa. Safety Rules 4. In case of spilling a chemical: If you spill anything on your skin, immediately begin to wash the area with lots of water and soap for 10-15 min. If you spill a large amount of a dangerous chemical, you will need to use the safety shower. Material safety data sheets ( MSDS ): Available for every chemical that you will be using in the lab. Provides toxicity details, safe handling protocols, and information on what to do in case of exposure. First aid kit: Must be available in every lab to be used in case of accidents, cuts or burns. Safety Rules Hood: It is a ventilated, enclosed work space that is used to capture and exhaust harmful or dangerous fumes, vapors, and particulate matter. Fires If a fire does occur, immediately step away from it and notify your supervisor. If the fire alarm goes off, immediately turn off all electric devices, walk to the main door of the lab and exit.
