What are some strategies for effective interprofessional communication? (Lapum et al., 2019) Principles of Interprofessional Communication Speak clearly Engage in active Use simple and clear listening language Speak up Maintain eye contact Seek clarification Be efficient Put clients first Incorporate timely information Show respect (Lapum et al., 2019) Factors Affecting Interprofessional Communication Several factors that can influence interprofessional communication Divided into three main categories : The physical environment The context Communication styles (Lapum et al., 2019) Ineffective Interprofessional Communication The following are examples of ineffective interprofessional communication. Think about strategies to manage each one. Disrespectful communication Failure to communicate one’s concerns Failure to communicate rationale for an action or decision Unclear/incomplete communication or miscommunication Ineffective conflict resolution on a plan of care (Lapum et al., 2019) Conflicts in an Interprofessional Environment Conflict is defined as a state of opposition between two or more perspectives Healthcare professionals may have different disciplinary perspectives which inform their understanding and priorities in client care Become problematic when these perspectives and priorities contradict each other What other factors can contribute or influence conflict within an interprofessional team? (Lapum et al., 2019) Conflict Management Strategies The following are examples of conflict management strategies: Be open to hearing varying disciplinary perspectives Engage in self-reflection Engage in respectful discussions Reflect on other’s perspectives Share your perspective and rationale Use a client-centred approach Use an evidence-informed approach (Lapum et al., 2019) Harassment and Communication Effective interprofessional communication and interactions are essential to safe and effective work environments in healthcare. Harassment and bullying: Terms used interchangeable Behaviour repetitive Can be overt or covert Harms or humiliates another person Usually occurs in context of a real or perceived power imbalance Forms of horizontal violence that occurs between nurses (Lapum et al., 2019) Harassment and Communication These are important questions that you need to ask yourself: Why is it important to understand violence, harassment, and bullying? What should you do if you observe someone being harassed? What should you do if you are being harassed or bullied?
