Integrated Science SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills Scientists use varied skills that they use when they study and do a scientific investigation. These skills are called SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS. Some science process skills are: OBSERVING INFERRING CLASSIFYING MEASURING DRAWING MANIPULATING RECORDING REPORTING Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills OBSERVING What is an observation? What do you use to make observations? Observing is a science process skill which using our senses (QUALITATIVE OBSERVATIONS) or measuring instruments (QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATIOSN), in a careful way to describe the appearance, sound, smell etc. of the things around you. What do you think is the difference between a qualitative and quantitative observation? Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills COMPARING AND CLASSIFYING Compare: to carefully observe and note the similarities and differences between things. Classify: using characteristics to put things together that are similar and to separate them from things which are different. Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills INFERRING: To give an explanation for what may have caused your observations. Who/ what overturned the trash can? Possible inferences:...a dog looking for food...a cat...a street person...the wind Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills MEASURING Measuring is another science process skill which accurately describes the size or quantity of something, e.g. its length. Special measuring tools are used to measure different physical properties e.g. a ruler is used to measure length. Measurements are recorded using specific units e.g. cm, m, km to measure length. Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills MEASURING cont’d Complete the table below: VARIABLE S.I. MEASURING TOOLS UNIT (write at least 3 tools for each variable) Time cm3 Triple beam balance 0C Ruler Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills MEASURING cont’d To be good at measuring: Find the value of each small division on the scale. Read the scales carefully and accurately. Record the amount and the unit you have used. Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills Subtopic: Measuring Reading scales accurately: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYFKZ8 gUVmY 3 easy steps: 1. Find the difference between any 2 large scale marks (longer mark on a scale). 2. Find how many smaller lines are in between those 2 large scale marks 3. 34Divide mL the answer of step 1 by answer to step 2 95 mL g g Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills MEASURING cont’d (alternatively do questions 13 -15, 35 and 36 of textbook Subject: Integrated Science Topic: Science Process Skills MEASURING cont’d Today’s SUMMaRY Use these words to complete the summary below: quantitative measurement Process skills measurement qualitative inferencing scale marks observations lines senses Scientists use special science _________ ________ when conducting experiments. When making _____________ from experiments, scientists may use their _______ or measuring instruments. If they use the former the observations are _________ and if they use measuring instruments the observations are _________. Measuring instruments have ________ _________ which make the observations more accurate than our senses. INTRODUCTION TO SI UNITS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7omxmCDp W7U
