Saleh and N. Al‐Dabbous, “Towards a code of ethics for e‐ services professionals”, e‐Society 2014, Nagoya, Japan, April 2014. Abstract: Delivering and maintaining services is becoming an important and sizable component accounting to about 80% of modern economies. E‐services include all the services that are delivered and maintained using the internet and mobile networks as the delivery vehicle. Issues related to privacy, security and trust are the major concerns that are hindering a faster increase in the popularity and usability of e‐services. Increasing the trustworthiness of e‐service providers relies heavily on both technical and human aspects that affect the proper delivery of e‐services. In this paper, we address one of the important human aspects dealing with the proper ethical behavior and professional conduct of professionals involved in the various aspects of e‐ services. E‐service professionals include those involved in the creation, owning, designing, testing, developing, operating, integrating, configuring and maintaining e‐services. A code of ethics is needed to ensure the proper delivery of e‐services aiming to contribute to higher level of trustworthiness ultimately leading to an increased economic activity. The proposed code of ethics is generic and builds on various codes of ethics that are already existing for professionals in certain specific service sectors. It also covers some foundational elements that deal with the personnel involved in delivering the e‐service, the information and communication flow within and at the e‐service interfaces, the adoption and use of appropriate technologies, the development of timely and robust policies and plans, the commitment to meeting service level agreements and desirable quality of services, the sensitivity to users’ privacy concerns, the establishment and enforcement of accountability measures, and the appropriate care when dealing with third party providers. This proposed code of ethics would also be considered as a contribution to the new emerging field of service science, management and engineering.
