Hello! Welcome to Earth and Life Science Class. I am Ms. Jean Cyra M. Laloma You can find me by searching my email [email protected] Universe and The Solar System: A Short Recap As you watched the video, here are questions to ponder: 1. What was the video all about? 2. Is it necessary to know what was outside our planet? 3. If you were given a chance to travel a specific part of our universe, what would it be and why? As you watched the video, here are questions to ponder: 1. What was the video all about? 2. Is it necessary to know what was outside our planet? 3. If you were given a chance to travel a specific part of our universe, what would it be and why? The Beginnings of Earth Why are we blessed to have planet Earth? OBJECTIVES: identify the unique explain the series of events 01 characteristics of Earth as 02 that led to the formation of the Earth; the only known planet to harbor life; showcase the importance of recognize the uniqueness of 03 four subsystems of the Earth 04 Earth, being the only planet through differentiated in the solar system with activities; and properties necessary to support life. What can you say about the graphic? EARTH’S PROFILE Earth is the third planet from the sun in the Solar System. AGE: 4.5 billion years old SHAPE: Oblate spheroid POSITION: Tilted ORIGIN: Nebular Hypothesis – started out as an immensely hot gaseous mass. Pressure and radiation heated the Earth and caused a shift in different materials. Nickel and iron, the heaviest materials, shifted to the core. Large pieces of crust move on top of the Earth’s mantle. This causes changes in the crust over time. It creates landforms like mountains and volcanoes. Atmosphere Water A large amount Earth is in a of ultraviolet special position, light reached where water the earth’s remains in its surface. liquid state and There were never completely many electrical freezes or storms. evaporates. Moon Particles that draw together, but orbits in a planet. The Earth’s moon is likely made of pieces of the Earth’s crust. It is theorized that they came from an asteroid strike. UNIQUENESS OF THE EARTH 12 Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life. Our planet’s has molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from harmful radiation coming from the Sun. This planet is called the “living planet.” 12 Think-Pair-Share Think-Pair-Share Therefore, if the Earth is like Goldilocks, it will take the right position in our solar system. That is why the Earth is in what we call the “Goldilocks Zone”. There are four categories that make the Earth a habitable planet: Temperature Energy Atmosphere Nutrients 1 Temperature Energy Life seems to be With a steady limited to a input of either temperature range light or chemical of -15oC to 115oC. energy, cells can In this range, run the chemical liquid water can reactions still exist under necessary for life. certain conditions. Atmosphere Nutrients It keeps the All solid planets surface warm and moons have and protects it the same general chemical from radiation makeup, so and small- to nutrients are medium-sized present. meteorites. Knowledge What are the four Check! categories that make the planet habitable? Let’s talk about Earth, Venus, and Mars. Earth, Venus, and Mars may have similarities: (1) They all are terrestrial planets, made of solid rocks and silicates; (2) They all have an atmosphere; (3) They all almost have the same time to rotate on their axes; (4) Earth and Mars both have water; (5) They all have carbon dioxide; and (6 All have landforms. Altogether they are known as the terrestrial planets. Earth, Venus, and Mars have differences: (1) Venus has no water; (2) Venus and Mars don’t have oxygen; and (3) Earth has life forms. UNIQUENESS OF EARTH ✓There is life on Earth. ✓There is temperature that allows water to be in liquid form. ✓There is water that can sustain life which is in liquid form. ✓Chemical reactions needed for life are possible. ✓Earth is in the Goldilocks Zone. ✓Energy flows continuously within Earth’s system. Here’s a reflective question to ponder… 1. What common characteristics do you share with Earth that you consider as unique as you or what makes you unique? 2.As part of Earth’s existence, what can you do to preserve the uniqueness of the planet? HOME-BASED ACTIVITY: “EARTHSPLORATION” 1. You are tasked to go outside and capture a picture featuring the unique characteristics of planet Earth around your house. You also have an option to use your most recent photo of nature in your gallery. 2. Any chosen subject (any object/organism) will do for this activity. 3. Make a CREATIVE TITLE for your output. 4. Shortly after that, you are tasked to create a reflection paper that will sum up the idea and your answer to a reflective question below: What common characteristics do you share with Earth that you consider as unique as you, or what makes you unique? As part of Earth’s existence, what can you do to preserve the uniqueness of the planet? 5. Print the picture on a SHORT bond paper and make sure that your reflection paper is in HANDWRITTEN form with a maximum limit of 2 paragraphs only. You have the freedom to add design to your output. 6. Submission of the activity (hardcopy) will be at our next meeting (face- to-face).
