one sugar molecule (monomer) Starter – 5 mins carbohydrate molecule (polymer) Answers on our mini white boards: Name a monomer found in carbohydrates. Name a polysaccharide. Bonus task – State how fungi, plants and animals store carbohydrates. Answers: Monomer in carbohydrates – Glucose. Polymers – Starch (carbohydrate store in plants). Glycogen (carbohydrate store in animals and fungi). Cellulose – used to strengthen plant cell walls. Chitin – used to strengthen fungi cell walls. Peptidoglycan (Murein) – used to strengthen bacterial cell walls. Lesson – Carbohydrate polymers Lesson outcomes: Bronze – Recall the monomer of carbohydrates. Silver – Describe the test for starch. Gold – Recall storage of glucose from variety of life topic. Remember! You use CORMS if it asks you to design or plan an experiment. You state the method (write out the method), if the question as describe an experiment. Carbohydrates Glucose is water soluble. This means it dissolves in water. Therefore, organisms need to store it as a polymer that is NOT water soluble (will not dissolve in water). Glucose is very important as it is used in RESPIRATION. Remember, respiration was one of the 8 life processes Video to help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13H1urX3gxI Test for Starch – Iodine SOLUTION Prepare the food sample – we will cover this in another lesson. Place a small sample of the food on the spotting tile. Add 2 - 3 drops of Iodine SOLUTION to the food sample. Observe the colour change. Negative result (no starch) – orange/brown Positive result – blue/black And finally… Complete the “Science Progress tracker” for the movement of molecules test. The tracker is in assignments in Teams. Homework – complete the “Science Progress tracker”. Did we meet the outcomes? Lesson outcomes: Bronze – Recall the monomer of carbohydrates. Silver – Describe the test for starch. Gold – Recall storage of glucose from variety of life topic.
