The media has a number of very important roles to play in the modern world. One of the most popular roles that the media has is to **entertain** us. There are many ways that the media will entertain us including by making TV shows for us to watch or stream live events such as sports and gaming tournaments. Another job of the media is to **inform** us. This may be through making factual documentaries for TV and Radio that we can also access online. Examples of this would include documentaries such as Blue Planet or the **documentary we will watch later.** The media will also keep us up to date on current affairs and events as they are happening. This could be through news bulletins like on BBC or in newspaper articles about key moments such as the death of the Queen or government decisions. One of the most important roles of the media in a democracy is to **scrutinise**. This is when the media will investigate and ask really difficult questions of the government. The media will do this so that voters know what the government is doing. For example, the media exposed that members of the UK government had been having parties in Number 10 downing street during Covid Lockdowns. A forth role of the media is to **factcheck**. This is something that the broadcast media will mostly do. They will look into the claims made by people to see if it is true or not and then report to the public what is true and highlight what is untrue. This is a very important role as people need to know if the information they have been told is accurate and reliable or if it cannot be trusted. A final role of some types of media is to **influence** us. This is when the media will try to influence how we think and our opinions. This may be in the form of adverts that try to make us buy something. It could also be newspaper article trying to persuade us to vote a certain way or convince us that their opinion is the correct way to think. One of the main things that makes the Broadcast media in the UK different is that by law, what it produces **must be balanced and impartial** when it comes to reporting the news and politics. This means telling or sharing both sides of the story. The broadcast media **must not be biased**. For entertainment purposes the shows, films and radio productions can be biased and make fun of politicians. **Broadcast Media: Informing and Educating Us** One of the main roles of the broadcast media is to inform and educate us. This is why in moments of crisis many people in the world will log in, turn on or tune into the broadcast media to learn about events as they are happening. ![](media/image98.png)In our world it is very **easy for people to make claims** and it can sometimes be **hard to figure out if it is true or not**. A very important job that the Broadcast media has is to fact check what is said by politicians and other famous people. This is so that people can make up their own mind and know if what the hear is true or if it is designed to influence them. The **Channel 4 FactCheck**[^1^](#fn1){#fnref1.footnote-ref} service (as well as BBC Reality Check) **help to check** and see if some of the **claims** made are **actually true**. This helps all of understand the different parts of a story. As well as a number of news programmes shown on TV and online, the radio will often host interviews that put politicians on the spot. How do you think Liz Truss would feel afterward? **Advertising in the Media**Broadcasters like Channel Four, Channel Five, ITV and Sky etc need to sell advertising time to make money. Companies will spend millions to advertise on television and online. They will employ specialist advertising agencies to create campaigns for them to help influence how we spend our time and our money. The first goal of any newspaper and site is to make money for the owners. This is why they have lots of advertising on them. All kinds of newspapers and sites have a role in informing us. The **Tabloid** press is the **most** **popular** of the two and quite often focuses more on **gossip** and dramatic stories. Tabloids are more focused on trying to **entertain** the reader as well as **influence** how they think and act. This is in part so they keep buying the newspaper. The **Quality** press tends to focus on more **political** and business-like stories which can be quite complex. However, it can be hard to do so when we're glued to rectangular screens, becoming more acquainted with our friends' online than their real-life personas. Stina Sanders, a former model who has 107,000 followers on Instagram, explained how social media sometimes makes her feel like she's being left out. "I know from my experience I can get FOMO when I see my friend's photos of a party I didn't go to, and this, in turn, can make me feel quite lonely and anxious,".   **Sleep** Having enough sleep is very important. However, many of us use our phones too soon before choosing the hit the hay, making it harder to doze off. "Getting worked up with anxiety or envy from what we see on social media keeps the brain on high alert, preventing us from falling asleep," explained Dr Bono.  Try setting yourself a strict rule of not going on your phone for at least 40 minutes to an hour before going to bed, and see if that makes a difference to the quality of your sleep.  **Attention span** It's not just your subconscious brain that you need to worry about, but also the extent to which your brain is able to fully concentrate when you're awake.  Going on social media before you go to bed can negatively affect the quality of your sleep. While it's incredible to consider the amount of information readily available at our fingertips thanks to social media, it also means that people have become far more easily distracted. "Social media has provided a means of constantly giving into the temptation of instant, easy-access entertainment," said Dr Bono. **Mental health** Not only has social media been proven to cause unhappiness, but it can also lead to the development of mental health issues such as anxiety or depression when used too much or without caution.
