  • Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869, in the coastal town of Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • He trained as a lawyer and began his political career in South Africa, where he worked for Indian merchants.
  • He returned to India in 1915 and led the Indian National Congress, a political organization devoted to achieving independence from British rule.
  • He employed nonviolent resistance to win support for his cause and led nationwide campaigns for social reform.
  • In 1947, British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan, and Gandhi was opposed to the idea. However, he accepted independence for both countries.
  • Following independence, he worked to resolve religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims. He died in 1948, at the age of 78.
