    Writing Strategies for Engaging Introductions

    • Broad to Narrow (Funnel): Begin with a general concept before honing in on a specific instance.

      • Example: Start with a general statement about diet books and narrow down to critique a particular fad diet.
    • Reversal or Anti-thesis: Present an idea, then contradict it to create intrigue.

      • Example: Express confidence in returning to school as an adult, followed by the unexpected challenge of feeling less prepared than younger peers.
    • Anecdote or Brief Story: An engaging opening can stem from a personal narrative to establish relatability.

      • Example: Share a poignant story of a young child abandoned by their mother to lead into discussions about parental responsibility.
    • Ask a Series of Questions: Stimulate curiosity through questions, encouraging readers to think deeply about the topic.

      • Example: Pose inquiries about love, prompting reflection on its complexities and various facets.
    • Use a Well-Known Quotation: Incorporate a famous quote for added authority or humor in the introduction.

      • Example: Use a quote from Benjamin Franklin to introduce a personal narrative about unwelcome long-term guests.
    • Show the Importance of Your Topic: Clearly articulate the significance of the subject matter at the outset.

      • Example: Emphasize the critical nature of child safety in vehicles, highlighting associated risks and the urgency for action.
