  • Adolf Hitler, determined to make Germany a strong and powerful country, fought for the defeated German army in World War I and was humiliated by the Treaty of Versailles.

The Treaty of Versailles (1919)

  • Germany had to accept the treaty's terms and sign it, accepting blame for starting the war.
  • Germany had to pay for the war, with the money going to the winning nations.
  • Germany was restricted from having a large army (limited to 100,000 men), navy (limited to six battleships), and no submarines, air force, or tanks.
  • Germany had to hand over large areas of its land to the winning nations, including land used to create new countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia.
  • Germany was prohibited from uniting with Austria again, and no German soldiers could enter the Rhineland, a German region close to France.

Hitler's Aims

  • Hitler's three main aims were to:
    • Regain the land Germany lost after World War I, even if it meant breaking the Treaty of Versailles.
    • Unite all German-speaking people into one country, the 'Greater German Reich'.
    • Expand Germany's territory by taking land from weaker countries, believing that true Germans needed extra living space ('lebensraum') to reach their full potential.
