Study Notes
White Fibro Cartilage
- Not surrounded by perichondrium
- Tough type of cartilage
- Structure: Dense collagen fibers (type I), arranged in parallel bundles
- Cartilage cells (chondrocytes) inside lacunae, present in rows between collagen bundles, embedded in very scanty matrix around them
- Sites: Intervertebral discs, Symphysis pubis, Mandibular joint, Sternoclavicular joint
Growth of Cartilage
- Appositional growth: Growth by addition of new layers of cartilage to its surface by the activity of cells from inner layer of perichondrium (chondroblasts)
- Interstitial growth: Growth of cartilage from inside by division of chondrocytes which proliferate and produce matrix around them
