Weld Inspection

Weld inspection is a critical process used during manufacturing and construction to ensure the quality of welds produced by various welding techniques. This procedure involves examining and evaluating welded joints to assess their integrity and overall performance.

Visual Inspection

Visual inspection is one of the most common methods used to evaluate welds. It requires minimal equipment and can be done quickly. During this process, welders or inspectors examine the surface of the weld looking for signs of defects such as cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, underfilling, overfilling, or incomplete penetration. They also look for evidence of other issues like improper preparation of workpieces, use of incorrect electrodes, incorrect settings or parameters, etc..

Defect Detection

To facilitate visual inspections, welders often employ specific techniques or tools to detect defects more easily. For instance, they may use dye penetrant testing, which involves applying a fluorescent liquid onto the surface of the weld to highlight any surface-breaking flaws. Another technique, radiographic inspection, uses X-rays to examine internal defects within the weld.

Documentation and Reporting

Regardless of whether a visual inspection is performed manually or with specialized equipment, it's essential to document findings thoroughly. Inspectors should provide written reports detailing the condition of each weld, including its size, shape, and location. These records serve as part of the quality assurance system, helping to maintain consistent standards across projects.
