  • Volleyball started in 1895.
  • William Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts, created volleyball.
  • Initially called Mintonette, volleyball was designed to be less physically demanding than basketball.
  • The serve is determined by a coin toss.
  • The ball must be served behind the end line by the right back player.
  • A serve that touches the net and goes over is legal.

  • Players cannot touch the net, step over the centerline, or reach over the net.
