- Volleyball started in 1895.
- William Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts, created volleyball.
- Initially called Mintonette, volleyball was designed to be less physically demanding than basketball.
- The serve is determined by a coin toss.
- The ball must be served behind the end line by the right back player.
- A serve that touches the net and goes over is legal.
- The serving team rotates clockwise when getting the ball to serve.
- Players cannot touch the net, step over the centerline, or reach over the net.
- The net height is 7' 4 1/8” for women.
- The net height is 7' 11 5/8” for men.
- Holding or throwing the ball is illegal.
- A player must distinctly hit the ball to avoid a "carry".
- Contact includes any touch, but a block does not count as a contact.
- A team can play the ball a maximum of 3 times before sending it over the net.
- A player cannot hit the ball twice in a row, unless a teammate hits it in between.
- A ball landing on the boundary line is considered in.
- If the ball hits the ceiling and crosses to the other side, it is out.

- Contact for a Overhead Pass/Set on the volleyball, extend arms and legs toward target
- Spike/Attack/Hit: the third sequence of a pass (bump), set, spike (hit) combination
- A player approaches a set, jumps, and hits the volleyball downward toward the opponent’s side for a Spike/Attack/Hit
- Underhand serve: Use a fist to propel the volleyball over the net
- Overhand serve: contact the ball above the shoulder with an open palm Jump Serve: use an overhand serve while jumping in the air
