Volleyball Basics

- Each team fields six players on the court.
- It is considered one of the most popular team sports worldwide.
History of Volleyball
- Volleyball emerged in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
- William G. Morgan is credited with inventing volleyball.
- The original name for volleyball was "mintonette".
Basic Rules
- A team has 6 players, with 3 positioned in the front row and 3 in the back row.
- A team can hit the ball a maximum of three times per side before sending it over the net.
- Players cannot hit the ball twice in succession; a block is not considered a hit in this rule.
- A ball landing on the boundary line during play is considered "in."
- A ball is considered "out" if it hits an antenna, the floor entirely outside of the court, any net or cables beyond the antennas, the referee stand or pole, or the ceiling above a non-playable area.
- Contacting the ball with any part of a player's body is legal.
- Catching, holding, or throwing the ball is against the rules.
- Simultaneous contact by two or more players counts as one play, and either player can make the next contact.
- Players are restricted from blocking or attacking a serve while on or inside the 10-foot line.
- Higher-level competitions often include an officiating crew of two referees, line judges, a scorer, and an assistant scorer.
Violations
- Stepping on or over the service line while serving results in a violation.
- Failure to clear the net successfully during a serve will result in a violation.
- Making illegal contact with the ball, such as lifting, carrying, or throwing, is a violation.
- Touching the net with any body part while the ball is in play is a violation.
- Crossing the court's centerline with any part of the body leads to a violation.
- Serving out of the correct order is a violation.
Basic Volleyball Skills
- Serving is used to initiate play with an arm swing to send the ball over the net into the opponent's court.
- Passing is used to receive the ball from opponents.
- Passing can control the ball accurately without illegally lifting or carrying it.
- Setting involves receiving a teammate's pass and using fingertips to pass the ball overhead to an attacker following through with arms fully extended to the hitting target.
- Attacking/spiking aims to send the ball into the opponent's court to score a point.
- Successful attacks incorporate a quick approach, a strong arm swing, and follow-through.
- Blocking is used to prevent an opponent's attack from crossing the net.
- An effective block redirects the ball into the opponent's court or slows it down for a defensive play.
- Digging involves a forearm pass in a low position to receive an opponent's attack, typically used for balls hit near the defender.
