Volleyball History and Origins
- Invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan
- Developed as a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball
- Originally called "mintonette"
- Designed at Springfield College of the YMCA
- Early nets were only 6'6" high (consider the average height in the 19th century)
- Offensive styles evolved over time
- Philippines demonstrated setting and spiking in 1916
- US Volleyball Association (USVBA) formed in 1928 to standardize rules
- Introduction of a specialist defensive player (Libero) improved rally length and multi-phase play
- Service rules evolved beyond simply putting the ball in play to being offensive
Volleyball Court Dimensions and Facilities
- Court dimensions: 60 feet by 30 feet (18 meters by 9 meters)
- Net placed in the center, dividing the court equally to two 30x30 foot (9x9 meter) zones
- Center line: Dividing the court into equal halves
- Attack line: 10 feet (3 meters) from each side of the center line.
- Service line: 10 feet inside the sideline.
- Net height: 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 meters) for women, 8 feet (2.44 meters) for men

Volleyball Equipment and Basic Rules
