Vocabulary Unit 1
- Assuage: The expression of approval or favorable opinion, praise; official approval. Also, disapproval, condemnation, censure.
- Coalition: A combination, union, or merger for a specific purpose. Can include alliances, leagues, federations, and splinter groups.
- Elicit: To draw forth, induce, or evoke a response. Synonyms include evoke, extract, educe, repress, quash, squelch, stifle.
- Hackneyed: Used so often as to lack freshness or originality. Synonyms include banal, trite, corny, commonplace, new, fresh, novel, original.
- Innuendo: A hint, indirect suggestion, or reference, often derogatory. Synonyms include insinuation, intimidation. Contrast with direct statement.
- Intercede: To plead on the behalf of someone else, to serve as an intermediary in a disagreement; also called intervene or mediate.
- Jaded: Wearied, worn out, or dulled, particularly from indulgence; satiated. Synonyms include sated, surfeited, cloyed. Contrast with unspoiled, uncloyed.
- Petulant: Peevish, annoying by trifles, easily irritated and upset. Synonyms include irritable, testy, waspish. Contrast with amiable, placid.
- Transcend: To rise above or beyond; exceed. Synonyms include surpass, outstrip.
- Unctuous: Excessively smooth or smug. Synonyms include mealymouthed, fawning, greasy. Contrast with gruff, blunt.
- Ameliorate: To improve, make better.
