19 Questions

What primary function does the VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) serve?

Simplifies the management of the VLAN database across multiple switches

As the number of switches increases in a small- or medium-sized business network, what challenge becomes more pronounced?

overall administration required to manage VLANs and trunks

What are the benefits of using VTP? Select all that apply (A) VLAN configuration consistency across the network. (B) Accurate tracking and monitoring of VLANs. (C) Dynamic reporting of added VLANs across a network. (D) Reduces the bandwidth usage of the network. (E) broadcasts commands on several networks.

A, B, C

What does a VTP Domain consist of?

One or more interconnected switches

What defines the boundary of a VTP domain?

A router or Layer 3 switch

How do switches in a VTP domain share VLAN configuration details?

Using VTP advertisements

How many different modes are available in VTP?

Three: Server, Client, Transparent

In VTP, what is the role of a server mode switch?

Advertises VTP VLAN information to other switches in the same VTP domain and manages VLAN creation, deletion, or renaming

What is the role of a VTP client mode switch?

Cannot create, change, or delete VLANs but forwards advertisements to other clients

What mode must be configured for VTP in order to function as a client?

VTP Client mode

What is the purpose of separating your network into smaller management domains using VTP?

To reduce VLAN management complexity

How many VTP domains can a switch be a member of at one time?

One

What must be specified before creating or modifying VLANs on a VTP server?

The VTP domain name

if the vtp domain name is not specified, VLAN information is propagated over the network.

False

For a VTP server or client switch to participate in a VTP-enabled network as a server or client, what is required?

It must be part of the same domain

What components are used for domain name propagation in VTP?

Servers, clients, and advertisements

What does VTP pruning achieve?

Increases network available bandwidth by restricting flooded traffic to trunk links used to reach estination devices

What happens to broadcasts, multicasts, and unknown unicasts without VTP pruning?

They are flooded across all trunk links within a VTP domain

What does it mean when VTP pruning restricts traffic?

The destination switch does not have the same VLAN as the initiating the broadcast

Study Notes

VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)

  • Primary function of VTP: facilitates VLAN configuration consistency across the network.
  • Challenge in a large network: managing VLAN configurations across multiple switches.

Benefits of VTP

  • Ensures VLAN configuration consistency across the network.
  • Enables accurate tracking and monitoring of VLANs.

VTP Domain

  • A VTP domain consists of a group of interconnected switches with the same VTP domain name.
  • The boundary of a VTP domain is defined by the switches that share the same VTP domain name.
  • Switches in a VTP domain share VLAN configuration details.

VTP Modes

  • Three modes are available in VTP: Server, Client, and Transparent.
  • Server mode switch: holds the VLAN configuration and distributes it to other switches in the domain.
  • Client mode switch: receives VLAN configuration from the server switch and sends updates back to it.
  • To function as a client, the switch must be configured in Client mode.

VTP Configuration

  • A switch can be a member of only one VTP domain at a time.
  • Before creating or modifying VLANs on a VTP server, the VTP domain name must be specified.
  • If the VTP domain name is not specified, VLAN information is propagated over the network.

Domain Name Propagation

  • The VTP domain name is propagated through VTP advertisements.
  • VTP advertisements are sent by the VTP server to the client switches in the domain.

VTP Pruning

  • VTP pruning restricts traffic by blocking unnecessary VLAN traffic on trunk links.
  • Without VTP pruning, broadcasts, multicasts, and unknown unicasts are flooded to all VLANs.
  • VTP pruning reduces unnecessary VLAN traffic on trunk links.
