Study Notes
Learner Objectives
- Identify locations of major pulse points: carotid, apical, brachial, radial, femoral, popliteal, posterior tibial, dorsalis pedis.
- Recognize normal and abnormal values for key vital signs: temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, ankle-brachial index, respiratory rate, body mass index, pulse oximetry.
- Outline procedures for monitoring vital signs.
- Detect signs and symptoms of cardiovascular and respiratory impairments.
Vital Signs
-
Body Temperature: An essential vital sign reflecting the body’s core temperature. Normal ranges vary but typically fall between 97°F (36.1°C) and 99°F (37.2°C).
-
Pulse: Indicates heart rate through palpation at various sites, with normal resting pulse for adults around 60-100 beats per minute.
-
Blood Pressure (BP): Measured using a sphygmomanometer; normal is approximately 120/80 mmHg.
-
Abnormal Blood Pressures:
- Hypertension: Often asymptomatic; symptoms can include headache, dizziness, fatigue, palpitations, nosebleeds, and pressure behind the eyes.
- Orthostatic Hypotension: Sudden drop in BP upon standing; symptoms include light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, cold sweats, and syncope, commonly observed after surgery or prolonged bed rest.
-
Abnormal Blood Pressures:
Pulse Sites / Locations
- Specific anatomical locations for pulse checks include major arteries which can reflect cardiovascular health.
Respirations (RR)
- Frequency and depth of breaths are vital indicators of respiratory health; normal rates for adults range from 12 to 20 breaths per minute.
Equipment for BP Measurements
- Essential tools needed for accurate blood pressure readings include:
- Sphygmomanometer
- Stethoscope
- Alcohol wipes for sanitation
Related Measures
- Additional measurements important for comprehensive assessments may include body mass and ancillary metrics to evaluate health accurately.
Gait Speed
- Important measure of functional mobility, details to be referenced separately.
