Study Notes
Malignant Edema
- Acute and generally fatal toxemia caused by beta toxin, an endotoxin derived from Gram-negative bacterial cell walls
- Affects hosts such as cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, and humans
- Caused by Clostridium septicum, also known as Hemorrhagic Enteritis
Anaphylaxis
- Immediate (Type I) hypersensitivity reaction to antigens to which the body was previously sensitized
- Characterized by degranulation of mast cells and basophils
Haemophilus Complex
- Caused by Haemophilus somnus and Histophilus somni, a Gram-negative pleomorphic rod or coccobacillus
- Results in septicemic disease and thromboembolic meningoencephalitis (TEME)
- Shows tropism for the brain, particularly the cerebellum and brain stem
Sarcocystosis
- Also known as Sarcosporidiosis
- Caused by Sarcocystis, a coccidial protozoan with a 2-host cycle (predator-prey)
- Examples include S. cruzi (dog-cattle) and S. hirsuta (cat-cattle)
Coccidiosis
- Caused by Eimeria bovis, which infects the cecum and colon
- Caused by Eimeria zuernii, which infects the small and large intestine
Bovine Ephemeral Fever
- Caused by a bullet-shaped virus transmitted by arthropods
- Also known as Three-day Sickness
