Study Notes
Vertebrata
- Vertebrates are a diverse group of animals with over 62,000 identified species.
-
Key Characteristics:
- A stiff rod (vertebral column or Notochord) running along the body.
- A bundle of nerves (spinal cord) above the vertebral column
- Alimentary canal situated below the spinal cord.
- Mouth located at the anterior end or below it.
- Anus opening to the exterior, followed by a tail.
Human Anatomy
-
General Body Plan:
- Head: Contains the brain, spinal cord, and sensory organs.
- Trunk: Houses the body cavity (coelom).
- Tail: Caudal extension of the body wall
- Appendages: Two pairs of limbs or fins for locomotion.
-
Satellite Characteristics:
- Integumentary System: Includes skin, hair, nails, and glands. Protects the body, regulates temperature, and houses sensory receptors.
- Skeletal System: Consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons providing support, protection, movement, and mineral storage.
- Muscular System: Responsible for movement, posture, heat generation, and voluntary/involuntary contractions.
- Nervous System: Complex network comprising the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Coordinates body functions, relays messages through impulses, and facilitates sensory perception, motor control, and cognition.
- Cardiovascular System: Heart, blood vessels, and blood transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste. Regulates temperature, pH, and electrolyte balance.
- Lymphatic System: Lymph nodes, vessels, and organs (spleen, thymus). Aids immunity by filtering fluid and transporting fatty acids.
- Respiratory System: Includes lungs, trachea, bronchi, and diaphragm. Facilitates gas exchange between the body and the environment.
- Digestive System: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas. Processes food and absorbs nutrients.
- Urinary System: Kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Filters blood, removes waste, and regulates fluid balance.
- Endocrine System: Glands (pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, reproductive). Produces hormones regulating growth, metabolism, reproduction, and development.
