Vehicle Definitions
- Abandoned Vehicle: Any vehicle left unattended on the highway for over 24 hours.
- Emergency Vehicle: Includes police and fire vehicles, federal agency vehicles, ambulances, and private vehicles with blue/red flashing lights and warning systems.
- Bicycle: A device with two or three wheels (diameter 16" or greater) propelled by human power.
- Bus: A motor vehicle designed to carry more than ten passengers for transportation purposes.
- Commercial Motor Vehicle: Vehicles used in commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, or designed to carry 16 or more occupants.
Licenses and Permits
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Issued by the state to operate commercial motor vehicles, adhering to standards in 49 CFR Part 383.
- Instruction Permit: Allows operation of a vehicle under supervision by a licensed driver at least 21 years old; must be at least 15.5 years old.
- Provisional License: For drivers under 18, requires driving on a provisional license for at least 6 months before obtaining a class 3 driver's license.
- Moped License (Class 1): Required to operate a moped; passing a special knowledge test and an off-street skills test is mandatory.
- Motorcycle License (Class 2): Required to operate a motorcycle; similar testing as for moped license is applicable.
Vehicle Classes
- Driver's License (Class 3): Allows operation of vehicles with a GVWR of 15,000 pounds or less and up to 15 passengers.
- Class 4 Driver's License: Authorizes operation of single vehicles with a GVWR of 15,001 to 26,000 pounds.
- Class A Commercial License: For any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more and towed vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds.
- Class B Commercial License: For single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or towed vehicles not exceeding 10,000 pounds.
Roadway and Usage
- Crosswalk: Defined area at intersections for pedestrian crossing, marked by lines or other indications.
- Safety Zone: Space designated exclusively for pedestrians, marked visibly within a roadway.
- Highway: Publicly maintained roadways accessible for vehicular travel, covering the entire width between boundary lines.
- Business District: Area including a highway with at least 300 feet of business/industrial frontage within 600 feet along the highway.
Vehicle Weight & Capacity
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): Total weight of the vehicle combined with its load-carrying capacity, essential for classification of commercial vehicles.
