Study Notes
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
- REBT assumes humans are born with potential for rational and irrational thinking.
- Self-preservation, happiness, loving, and growth are natural tendencies.
- Self-destruction, avoidance, perfectionism, and blaming are also potential tendencies.
- Biological and social factors influence vulnerability to mental disturbances.
Key Concepts
- A-B-C Model:
- A (activating event): a fact, behavior, or attitude.
- B (belief): the person's belief about A. Causes emotional/behavioral consequences.
- C (consequence): the emotional/behavioral outcome. A does not cause C, B does.
- Disputing (D): challenging irrational beliefs and absolutist "shoulds," "musts," "awfulizing," and self-criticism.
- Effect (E): replacing unhealthy thoughts with healthy ones.
- New feeling (F): result of effective philosophy.
Emotional Disturbance
- REBT believes irrational beliefs are created through self-repetition & reinforcement. These beliefs are often learned from significant others during childhood.
- REBT goals:
- Minimize emotional disturbance.
- Achieve more self-actualization (a happier existence).
- Rational thinking, appropriate feelings, and effective actions to reach goals.
- Separate evaluating behaviors from feelings about oneself.
- Accept self despite imperfections.
Therapeutic Relationship
- Therapists are unconditional, demonstrating, modifying, and challenging clients.
- Therapists are teachers
Therapeutic Techniques
- Cognitive Techniques:
- Coping self-statements: developing rational beliefs.
- Cost-benefit analysis: listing advantages vs. disadvantages of actions.
- Psychoeducational methods: audiotapes of sessions and principles.
- Emotive Techniques:
- Imagery: visualizing negative situations to generate positive emotions.
- Role playing: practicing appropriate behaviors in social settings.
- Shame-attacking exercises: overcoming shame when someone disapproves.
- Forceful self-statements, self-dialogue: arguing against irrational beliefs.
- Behavioral Methods:
- Activity homework: assignments to reduce irrational beliefs.
- Reinforcements and penalties: rewarding rational thinking, penalizing irrational thinking.
- Skills training: developing client's skills.
Additional Information
- Workshops and groups can complement REBT by teaching social skills.
- REBT helps clients dispute irrational beliefs by pointing out rational beliefs to others to learn more effective ways of challenging their own dysfunctional thoughts.
