Study Notes
Congenital Abnormalities of the Penis
- Epispadias: urethral opening is located on the dorsal (upper) surface of the penis
- Hypospadias: urethral opening is located on the ventral (under) surface of the penis
Testicular Abnormalities
- Cryptorchidism: testis fails to descend into the scrotum properly
Scrotal Abnormalities
- Hydrocele: excessive fluid accumulates in the space between the layers of the tunica vaginalis of the scrotum
- Causes: congenital defect in newborns, injury, infection, or tumor
- Spermatocele: a cyst containing fluid and sperm that develops between the testis and the epididymis
Vascular Abnormalities
- Varicocele: a dilated vein in the spermatic cord
- Cause: lack of valves leads to backflow, resulting in increased pressure and dilation
Emergency Conditions
- Torsion of the testes: testes rotate on the spermatic cord, compressing arteries and veins
Prostate Gland Abnormalities
- Prostatitis: infection or inflammation of the prostate gland
