Study Notes
- Urinary system functions: producing and excreting urine, regulating body fluid levels, filtering wastes from blood, maintaining electrolyte, water, and acid-base balances in the body.
- Kidneys' location: under back muscles, behind the parietal peritoneum, above the waistline. Right kidney is slightly lower than left. 20% of total blood is pumped by the heart to the kidneys.
- Kidneys' internal structure: renal artery and vein, renal column, medulla, pyramid, pelvis, ureter. Cortex is the outer layer, medulla is the inner portion, pyramids are triangular divisions of medulla, and papilla is the innermost end of a pyramid. Renal pelvis is an expansion of the upper end of ureter inside the kidney, and calyces are its divisions (papilla opens into each calyx).
- Descending and ascending limbs of Henle, loop of Henle, and calyx of renal pelvis are part of the kidneys' internal structure.
- Nephron structure: kidneys have over a million nephrons, each made up of 2 parts - renal corpuscle in the cortex and the nephron itself, which looks like a tiny funnel with a long stem. The nephron is further divided into descending limb of Henle, loop of Henle, and collecting tubule.
