Upper Extremity Muscles
- The primary function of the muscles in the upper extremity is to enable movement, support, and stability of the shoulder, arm, forearm, and hand.
Shoulder Abduction
- The primary muscle responsible for shoulder abduction is the supraspinatus. This muscle originates from the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and inserts onto the greater tubercle of the humerus.
Biceps Brachii Action
- The biceps brachii muscle flexes the elbow. It also participates in supination of the forearm and contributes to shoulder flexion.
Posterior Upper Extremity Muscles
- Many muscles are located on the posterior side of the upper extremity. These include the triceps brachii (responsible for elbow extension), deltoid (shoulder abduction, flexion, and extension), and latissimus dorsi (shoulder extension, adduction, and internal rotation).
Rotator Cuff Muscles
- The rotator cuff muscles – supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis – are responsible for stabilizing the shoulder joint. They perform a variety of movements, including internal and external rotation, as well as abduction.
