Football

History

• Invented in Britain in the mid-19th century
• Originally called "rugby football" to distinguish from other forms of football
• Modern game developed in 1863 with the formation of the Football Association in England

Rules and Gameplay

• Objective: score goals by carrying or throwing the ball into the end zone of the opponent's field
• Game played with two teams of 11 players each
• Four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes
• Players can either run with the ball (rush) or throw the ball to teammates (pass)

Positions

• Quarterback (QB): leads the team and throws the ball
• Running Back (RB): runs with the ball
• Wide Receiver (WR): catches passes from the QB
• Linemen: block for the QB and RB

Scoring

• Touchdown: 6 points for carrying or throwing the ball into the end zone
• Field Goal: 3 points for kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts
• Extra Point: 1 or 2 points for kicking the ball after a touchdown

Basketball

History

• Invented in 1891 by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts
• Originally played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets
• Modern game developed in the early 20th century with the formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA)

Rules and Gameplay

• Objective: score points by shooting the ball into the opponent's basket
• Game played with two teams of five players each
• Four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes in professional play and 8 minutes in college play
• Players can either shoot the ball or pass it to teammates

Positions

• Point Guard (PG): leads the team and brings the ball up the court
• Shooting Guard (SG): scores points from the perimeter
• Small Forward (SF): scores points from the perimeter and rebound
• Power Forward (PF): scores points in the paint and rebound
• Center (C): scores points in the paint and defend the basket

Scoring

• Field Goal: 2 points for shooting the ball into the opponent's basket
• Three-Pointer: 3 points for shooting the ball from behind the three-point line
• Free Throw: 1 point for shooting the ball unopposed from the free throw line
