Study Notes
The Human Neural System
- Divided into two parts: Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Includes the brain and spinal cord
- Site of information processing and control
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- Comprises of all the nerves of the body associated with the CNS (brain and spinal cord)
- Divided into two types of nerve fibres:
- Afferent fibres: transmit impulses from tissues/organs to the CNS
- Efferent fibres: transmit regulatory impulses from the CNS to peripheral tissues/organs
Divisions of Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- Somatic neural system: relays impulses from CNS to skeletal muscles
- Autonomic neural system: transmits impulses from CNS to involuntary organs and smooth muscles
- Autonomic neural system is further classified into:
- Sympathetic neural system
- Parasympathetic neural system
Visceral Nervous System
- Part of the peripheral nervous system
- Comprises the whole complex of nerves, fibres, ganglia, and plexuses
- Enables impulses to travel from CNS to viscera and from viscera to CNS
