Study Notes
Muscle Tissue Structure
- Each muscle is composed of many long, cylindrical fibers arranged in parallel arrays.
- These fibers are made up of numerous fine fibrils, called myofibrils.
Muscle Function
- Muscle fibers contract (shorten) in response to stimulation.
- After contraction, muscle fibers relax (lengthen) and return to their uncontracted state in a coordinated fashion.
- The action of muscles moves the body to adjust to environmental changes and maintain the positions of various body parts.
- Muscles play an active role in all body movements.
