Contaminated Bunker Gear

  • Contaminated bunker gear should be handled by attaching flash hoods to bunker pants, emptying pockets, and closing Velcro flaps before removing and placing it in a clear plastic bag.
  • The bag should be tied and returned to the apparatus for transport.

Returning to the Station

  • Upon return to the station, crews must adhere to a specific procedure in the following order:
  • Don PPE, including safety glasses, nitrite medical gloves, and an N95 mask.
  • Remove all personal bagged PPE from the apparatus and set it aside.
  • Remove equipment requiring decontamination and place it in a designated area.
  • Remove hose from the TFS pick-up and place it in the designated area.
  • Remove PPE from plastic bags and place it in an area for cleaning.
  • Personnel who were in the hazard zone must shower.
  • Station wear should be placed in a clear plastic bag until it can be washed.

Cleaning and Decontamination

  • Personnel will clean their personal PPE and assist in decontamination of the apparatus and equipment.
  • Crews will prepare their spare PPE for service and conduct station cleanup.
  • All personnel performing decontamination procedures must ensure the following:
  • All equipment and supplies required for safe handling of contaminated PPE will be in place prior to opening the containment bags.
  • The exhaust fan in the apparatus bay and the doors to the living quarters must be closed before opening the containment bags.

Fire Investigators

  • Fire Investigators must ensure they have assistance for decontamination procedures after completing their investigation.
  • If required, a suppression crew will attend to assist with decontamination of the Investigator.

Firefighter Gross Decontamination Checklist

  • Remove SCBA and set it aside.
  • Remove helmets, balaclavas, and face pieces, and place them in a bag.
  • Remove FF gloves and set them aside.
  • Don nitrite gloves and N95 mask and glasses.
  • Remove bunker coat and pants, and place them in a bag.
  • Put on station footwear and tie the bag.
  • Place the bag on the apparatus, but not in the cab.
  • Set up wash stations for SCBA and face pieces.
  • Decontaminate SCBA and face pieces.
  • Place SCBA and face pieces on the apparatus.
  • Remove nitrile gloves, N95, and dispose of them.
