Driver's License Requirements
- A person must hold a driver's license to drive a motor vehicle on a road
- An employer must ensure that their driver is the holder of a driver's license
- Failure to comply with this section is an offence
Producing a Driver's License
- A driver must produce their license for examination when required by a police constable
- The license must show the name and address of the holder, date of issue, and authority by which it was issued
- Failure to produce a license or refusing to declare a present address is an offence
Eligibility for a Driver's License
- A license will not be granted unless the applicant has either:
- Passed the prescribed test of competence to drive
- Held a certificate in Guyana or a license elsewhere in the Commonwealth authorising them to drive a motor vehicle of the same class or description
Provisional License
- A provisional license may be granted to an applicant to learn to drive a motor vehicle with a view to passing the prescribed test
- The license is granted upon payment of the prescribed fee and is subject to certain terms and conditions
- Failure to comply with the conditions of a provisional license is an offence
Tests of Competence
- Tests of competence to drive a motor vehicle are conducted by a Certifying Officer in the prescribed manner
- A prescribed fee must be paid for the test
Medical Fitness
- An applicant for a driver's license must declare if they are suffering from any disease or physical disability that may affect their driving
- If the applicant is suffering from a specified disease or disability, the Certifying Officer may refuse to grant the license
- However, the applicant may be granted a license limited to driving an invalid carriage or may be subjected to a test to prove their fitness to drive a motor vehicle.
