Units of Measurement
- Kilometre (km) is equal to 103 meters (m)
- Astronomical unit (AU) is equal to 1.496 × 1011 m
- A light year (ly) is equal to 9.46 × 1015 m
- A parsec (pc) is equal to 3.08 × 1016 m
- 1 gram (g) is equal to 1/1000 of a kilogram (kg)
- 1 milligram (mg) is equal to 1/1000000 of a kilogram (kg)
- 1 quintal is equal to 100 kg
- 1 metric tonne is equal to 1000 kg
- 1 amu (atomic mass unit) is defined as 1/12th of the mass of a C12 atom
- The mass of 1 ml of water is equal to 1g
- The mass of 1l of water is equal to 1kg
Time
- The SI unit of time is the second
- Time is measured in seconds, which can be used to express both very large and very small quantities.
Unit Prefixes
- The unit prefix "kilo" (k) is used for a factor of 103
- The unit prefix "mega" (M) is used for a factor of 106
- The unit prefix "giga" (G) is used for a factor of 109
- The unit prefix "tera" (T) is used for a factor of 1012
- The unit prefix "peta" (P) is used for a factor of 1015
- The unit prefix "deci" (d) is used for a factor of 10-1
- The unit prefix "centi" (c) is used for a factor of 10-2
- The unit prefix "milli" (m) is used for a factor of 10-3
Screw Gauge
- A screw gauge consists of a U-shaped metal frame with a hollow cylinder attached to one end.
- Grooves are cut on the inner surface of the cylinder through which a screw passes.
- The cylinder has a scale parallel to the axis of the screw, graduated in millimeters which is called the pitch scale (PS)
- One end of the screw is attached to a sleeve with a head called the thimble, which is divided into 100 divisions.
- The distance moved by the tip of the screw for a rotation of one division on the head scale is called the least count of the screw gauge.
Least Count of a Screw Gauge
-
The formula to calculate the least count is:
Least count = (Value of one smallest pitch scale reading) / (Total number of Head scale division)
-
For a typical screw gauge with a pitch of 1 mm and 100 divisions on the head scale, the least count is 0.01 mm.
Zero Error of a Screw Gauge
- In a perfect scenario, the zero of the head scale should coincide with the pitch scale axis when the fixed and movable studs are in contact. If this is not the case, there's a zero error.
- A negative zero error occurs when the zero of the head scale lies above the pitch scale axis.
Measuring Mass
- A common beam balance compares the mass of a sample with standard reference masses to measure mass accurately up to 5g.
- A physical balance is more sensitive than the beam balance and can measure mass correct to a milligram (mg).
