Stage Directions
- Stage directions are essential instructions for the production team, guiding the action of the play.
- These directions are not directly encountered by the audience, but are seen in the fully realized performance.
- Stage directions vary in purpose, but typically convey information about:
- Setting
- Set and props
- Lighting and sound
- Physical actions and emotional state of characters
Types of Stage Directions
- Two forms of stage directions:
- Paragraph form: typically informs the reader about the world of the play, including set and prop needs, and sometimes providing commentary about the type of world the characters inhabit.
- Parenthetical form: most often conveys the emotional state of a character or describes a physical action they take on stage, and sometimes used to convey a break in the dialogue.
Nine Specific Areas of a Stage
- Downstage left, center, and right
- Centerstage left, center, and right
- Upstage left, center, and right
- These directions are from the perspective of the actors, opposite of the audience's right and left.
Tragedy
- A genre that focuses on human suffering and does not have a happy ending.
- To the ancient Greeks, tragedies were a way to purge themselves emotionally, an experience called catharsis.
- Aristotle's requirements for a tragedy:
- Unity of action
- Story must be fully contained within the tragedy
- Example: Oedipus Rex, contained within the play, ending with Oedipus blinding himself and begging for exile.
