    Sentence Structure

    • Everything that happens in life, natural occurrences, historical events, conflicts, thoughts, feelings, opinions, ideas, and experiences are expressed in sentences.
    • A main idea is connected to an action or linked with other words to state a thought.
    • Long before children learn to read, they talk in sentences.
    • The sentence is basic to all human communication.

    Parts of Speech

    • Nouns: names of people, places, ideas or things (e.g., doctor, basement, liberty, television)

      • Count nouns can be singular or plural.
      • Noncount nouns have only one form.
      • Common nouns refer to general or abstract people, places, ideas, or things.
      • Proper nouns refer to specific people, places, ideas, or things.
    • Pronouns: take the place of nouns and can be the subject, object, or possessive of a sentence. (e.g., He, She, They, Them)

      • Personal pronouns refer to people and their forms change with the use in a sentence (subjective, objective, possessive).
      • Indefinite pronouns refer to abstract persons or things (e.g., everyone, someone, anybody).
    • Verbs: express action, link ideas, or help other verbs.

      • Action verbs show what the subject is doing.
      • Action verbs can also express "invisible" behavior.
      • Linking verbs connect the subject to related ideas.
      • Helping verbs assist the main verb.
      • Verb tense explains when the action takes place (Past, Present, Future).
    • Adjectives: add information about nouns or pronouns (e.g. new hat).

    • Adverbs: add information about verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs (e.g., shouted boldly).

    • Prepositions: link nouns and pronouns, expressing relationships between related words (e.g., in the attic).

    • Conjunctions: link related parts of a sentence (e.g., Coordinating conjunctions (and, or etc) and Subordinating conjunctions (while, since etc)).

    • Interjections: express emotion or feeling (e.g., Oh).

    Subjects and Verbs

    • The subject is the actor or main topic of the sentence.
    • The verb is the action or state of being.
    • Subjects can be one word, several words or a phrase.

    Independent and Dependent Clauses

    • Sentences are made up of clauses, which are groups of related words that contain both a subject and a verb; there are two types dependent and independent clauses.
    • Dependent clauses do not express a complete thought and are not sentences.
    • Independent clauses express a complete thought.
    • Sentences must have at least one independent clause to express a complete thought
