Sentence is the basic unit of language. It contains two essential parts - subject and predicate. Subject refers to the person or thing doing something in the sentence, while the predicate refers to the verb and any additional information about that person or thing.
Subject
The subject is usually the first part of a sentence. It indicates who or what performs the action in the sentence. The subject can be an individual, group, place, animal, object, idea, or even an entire paragraph. In the sentence "John Bledsoe sings beautifully," John Bledsoe is the subject.
Pronouns as subjects
Subject pronouns are used when the sentence starts with a linking verb (such as am, is, are, was, were, have been) and the subject is not mentioned before the verb. For example:
- I am happy.
- He was angry.
- They will arrive soon.
In each case, the pronoun is performing the action of the verb and therefore is the subject.
Noun phrases and phrases acting as subjects
A noun phrase acts as a subject if it begins with a capital letter and has a determiner or article directly preceding it. For example:
- The dog barked.
- My car broke down on the way home from work today.
Here, "dog" and "my car" are both noun phrases serving as the subject of their respective sentences.
Predicates
The predicate is the second essential part of a sentence and typically contains the verb and any additional information about the subject. A simple predicate consists of only a subject and a linking verb. For example:
- She is a doctor.
- We are going to the store.
More complex predicates include objects or complements and tell more about the subject or perform other actions on the subject. For example:
- She is a doctor of medicine.
- We are going to buy groceries from the store.
