Understanding Personality: Traits, Types, and Assessment

Lay people perceive personality as aspects of a person that elicit positive or negative reactions from others.
Psychologists define personality as an individual's unique constellation of psychological traits, values, interests, attitudes, worldview, and cognitive style that is relatively stable and enduring over time.
Personality assessment involves the measurement and evaluation of psychological traits, states, values, interests, attitudes, worldview, cognitive style, and related individual characteristics.
Methods of personality assessment include projective tests and objective tests.
Personality traits are any distinguishable, relatively enduring ways in which one individual varies from another, and they are relatively consistent across the lifespan.
Personality types are constellations of traits that are similar in pattern to one identified category of personality within a taxonomy of personalities.
Personality states are transitory exhibitions of some personality state that are relatively temporary predispositions.
Uses of personality measurement/assessment include basic research, clinical/counselling, personnel management, and threat assessment.
Projective tests are indirect methods of personality assessment that use ambiguous stimuli to draw inferences about a person's personality.
Inkblots are used in projective tests such as the Rorschach Test, which involves the test-taker free-associating responses to inkblots.
Scoring categories for the Rorschach Test include location, determinants, content, popularity, and form, which are associated with different personality traits.
The dark triad is a constellation of three related personality traits: Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism, which are typically measured with objective methods such as questionnaires.
