  • The first-ever organizational chart was designed by Civil engineer George Holt Henshaw, McCallum in 1855.
  • Willard C. Brinton used organizational charts in his book "Graphic Methods for Presenting Facts" in 1914.

  • Science, not Rule of Thumb.
  • Key components: Departmentalization, Chain of command, Span of Control, Tree-shaped structure.
  • Best practices: up to desk officer level, support staff with figures, abbreviations explained, two tables (organization and equipment), formatted to fit on a single page.
