Study Notes
The Internet
- The Internet is a global network of computer networks.
- It is based on the TCP/IP protocol, which governs machine-to-machine communication.
- It was developed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and originally known as ARPANET.
- It was intended for decentralized message passing and initially used by the military.
- Universities, companies, institutions, and eventually personal computers at home joined the Internet.
Local Network
- A local network is a network confined to a specific organization or physical location.
- Examples: ICS, BioSci, Computer Shop local networks.
- Local networks can connect with other local networks, collectively called an internet (small i).
The Web
- The Web (World Wide Web) is a subset of the Internet.
- It is a collection of interconnected websites and webpages.
- It was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research).
- Its initial purpose was to facilitate information sharing between scientists around the world.
- It was inspired by Ted Nelson's ideas about hypermedia, hypertext, and hyperlinks.
Key Concepts
- Hypermedia: A medium containing graphics, audio, video, hypertext, and hyperlinks.
- Hypertext: Text with links to other documents.
- Hyperlink: A link that connects one piece of information to another.
Components of the Web
- Web Server: Software that hosts and serves resources on the web.
- Web Browser: Software used by humans to access and display web resources.
- Web Page: A document written for the web, containing text, images, video, audio, and other plugins.
- Website: A collection of related web pages under the same domain.
Types of Web Pages
- Static Web Page: A web page that is served as is by the server, with the same content for all viewers.
- Dynamic Web Page: A web page that contains dynamic elements, so different viewers may see different content.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
- It was founded by Tim Berners-Lee in 1994.
- It is an international consortium of member organizations dedicated to ensuring the long-term growth of the web by developing protocols and guidelines.
- Member organizations include Google, IBM, Microsoft, and CERN.
