What is the relationship between force of static friction and limiting force?

The force of static friction is less than or equal to the limiting force

What happens if the applied force exceeds the limiting force?

The limiting force becomes the force of static friction

At what point does static friction have its maximum value?

$F_{A}$ (point A)

How does sliding friction compare to static friction?

It has a constant value and is less than static friction

What type of relationship exists between force of friction and applied force during static friction?

It is directly proportional

Study Notes

Friction

  • Friction is the retarding electromagnetic force that occurs when there is relative motion between surfaces in contact or a tendency to relative motion.

Types of Friction

  • There are two types of friction: static friction and kinetic friction.
  • Static Friction: The opposing force that occurs when one body tends to move over the surface of another, but the actual motion has not started.
  • Kinetic (Dynamic) Friction: The opposing force that occurs when a body is moving on another body.
  • Types of Kinetic Friction:
    • Sliding friction
    • Rolling friction

Coefficient of Static Friction

  • Coefficient of Static Friction (μs): The ratio of the force of limiting friction and normal reaction.
  • μs = F / R
  • The value of μs depends on the material and nature of the surfaces in contact (e.g., dry or wet, rough or smooth, polished or non-polished).

Variation of Frictional Force

  • Frictional force is independent of the area of contact between two surfaces.
  • The force of static friction is directly proportional to the applied force until the body is at rest.
  • Fstatic = Fapplied < (Flimiting = μs N)
  • When the applied force becomes equal to the limiting force, the body just tends to move.
