- A stereotype is a fixed idea about a particular group of people, it can be used to respond to situations quickly
- Stereotypes can be harmful because they generalise and cause us to ignore individual differences
- Prejudice can be rooted in factors like sex, age, ethnicity, social status
- Prejudice can lead to racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia
Respect for Diversity
- Six key behaviours that contribute to respect for diversity:
- Work effectively with people from all backgrounds
- Treat all people with dignity and respect
- Treat women and men equally
- Show respect for diverse viewpoints
- Examine own biases and behaviours

Cognitive Strategies

Communication Styles
- There are three types of communication styles:
- Passive: I don’t count, so you can take advantage of me. My feelings, needs, and thoughts are less important than yours. I’ll put up with anything.
- Assertive: This is what I think. This is how I feel. This is how I see the situation. How about you? If our needs conflict, I am certainly ready to explore our differences and I may be prepared to compromise.
- Aggressive: This is what I think, what I want, and what I feel. What matters to you isn’t important.

- Conflict is inevitable and can be a positive tool for growth.
- It can be an expression of hostility, antagonism, or misunderstandings
- It can occur at school between students, groups of students, teachers, administration and families
