What Is An Atom?
An atom is a single unit of any chemical element, which means it's the basic building block of every visible thing on earth and beyond. An atom consists of three main parts: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge; neutrons don't have any charge; and electrons have a negative charge. These charges help attract each other to keep atoms together, kind of like magnets.
How Are Atoms Created?
It was once thought that atoms were eternal particles—created when the universe began and present forever. However, scientists now know that new atoms are created inside stars through nuclear fusion reactions. When two hydrogen nuclei fuse into one helium nucleus, energy is released along with extra proton(s) and electron(s), making new atoms. This process called 'nucleosynthesis', happens in many places throughout our galaxy.
Why Do We Care About Atoms?
We care about atoms because understanding their behavior helps explain what elements compose materials and how these materials interact. By studying elements and compounds formed from combining different types of atoms, chemists figure out ways to create useful products, including medicines.
