Agoraphobia
- Definition: Excessive fear of a specific object, circumstance, or situation.
- DSM-5 Criteria: Fear or anxiety from public transportation, open spaces, confined spaces, lines/crowds, being alone outside of the home. Avoidance of these situations due to fear of panic attack, lack of help, or inability to withstand the situation.
- Duration: Must last for at least 6 months.
- ICD-10 Criteria: Fear of leaving home, going to public/crowded places, and traveling alone. Avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations. Often associated with panic disorder.
- Symptoms (DSM-5 and ICD-10 align): Fear and avoidance is disproportionate to the potential threat.
- Required Symptoms: At least one of the avoidance symptoms.
- Psychosocial Consequences: Marked distress or impairment.
- Exclusions: This condition is excluded if it's a result of another medical or mental disorder, or if it occurs without a panic disorder.
