    Study Notes

    Ulnar Neuropathy Overview

    • Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common upper extremity entrapment neuropathy, following carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
    • Localizing the exact site of ulnar nerve lesions is often challenging using electrophysiological studies (EDX).
    • The elbow is the primary site of ulnar nerve compression, but the nerve can also become entrapped at various locations, including the wrist.
    • Symptoms of ulnar neuropathy may mimic those from lesions of the lower brachial plexus or C8–T1 nerve roots.

    Role of Electromyography

    • Electromyography (EMG) serves several crucial purposes in diagnosing ulnar neuropathy:
      • Identifies the presence of an ulnar nerve lesion.
      • Accurately localizes the site of the lesion.
      • Helps exclude other disorders that present similar symptoms.

    Anatomy of the Ulnar Nerve

    • The ulnar nerve originates primarily from the C8 and T1 nerve roots, with a minor contribution from C7.
    • All ulnar nerve fibers traverse through the lower trunk of the brachial plexus.
    • The fibers then extend into the medial cord, where the terminal portion forms the ulnar nerve.
