- Petrarchan sonnet: Italian form, named after Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch). Octave rhymes ABBAABBA, sestet rhymes CDECDE (or sometimes CDCDCD).
- Shakespearean sonnet: English form, named after William Shakespeare. 14 lines divided into three quatrains (4-line stanzas) and a final couplet (2-line stanza). Rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
- Haiku: Japanese form. Three lines with 5-7-5 syllables respectively. Non-rhyming, focused on imagery.
- Ode: Extended lyric poem, characterized by emotion and a serious theme. Often follows strict rhythm and stanza patterns.
