Study Notes
Subcutaneous Injection (SC)
- Administered at a 45° angle
- Common sites: upper, outer arm; abdominal area; upper thigh
- Volume: typically not more than 2 mL
- Needle length: 1/2 to 5/8 inch; gauge: 25G to 27G
- Common uses: insulin, allergy injections, immunizations
Intradermal Injection (ID)
- Administered at a 10 to 15° angle
- Used primarily for allergy testing and tuberculin testing
- Administered just below the skin's surface with a fine gauge needle (26G or 27G)
- Needle length: 3/8 to 5/8 inch; bevel facing upward to form a wheel or lump
Intramuscular Injection (IM)
- Administered at a 90° angle
- Directly injects medication into muscle tissue
- Common sites:
- Deltoid (upper, outer arm)
- Ventrogluteal (lateral hip)
- Vastus lateralis (mid-portion of thigh)
- Dorsogluteal (upper, outer hip)
Z-track IM Injection
- Administered at a 90° angle
- Involves displacing muscle tissue to prevent leakage of medication
Dorsogluteal Site
- Located in the upper-outer quadrant of the buttocks
- Ideal for large-volume IM medications
Ventrogluteal Site
- Identified by placing the palm over the greater trochanter of the hip
- Thumb points toward the groin; index finger towards the anterior superior iliac spine
Vastus Lateralis Site
- Located in the thigh region
- Commonly used for IM injections, especially in infants and children
Deltoid Site
- Identified by placing four fingers across the deltoid muscle
- Top finger aligned with the acromion process for accurate placement
