Representative Democracy = Citizens choose a smaller group to govern on their behalf. Direct Democracy = Form of democracy where citizens vote firsthand. Democracy = A government in which the citizens hold the power to rule. Authoritarian = Government led by a single leader or group of people with absolute power.

Mercantilism = Economic system where colonies exist to make a favorable balance of trade for the mother country. Triangular Trade = Pattern of trade that developed during colonial times among America, Africa, and Europe. Boycott = To abstain from buying or using products from a company or business as a form of protest. Repeal = The action of revoking or annulling a law or congressional act.

Popular Sovereignty = Notion that power lies with the people. Legislature = A group of people that make laws. Bicameral = Legislature consisting of two parts. Ratify = Sign or give formal consent to.

Common Law = A system of law based on precedent and customs. Social Contract = Government and people agree to obey the laws and it passes (John Locke) Puritans = A group of Protestants that arose in the 16th century within the Church of England, demanding the simplification of doctrine and worship. Indentured Servants = A person who agrees to work for 4-7 years in return for a person paying their passage to the New World.

Federalism = The breaking of the government into Federal and State levels. Monarchy = A government in which law-making power is given to a single person, usually holding such authority by birthright. Republic = Representative government made famous by the Roman Senate. Totalitarian = System of government that controls almost every aspect of people’s lives.

Citizen = Community member who owes loyalty to the government and is entitled to protection from it. Immigrant = A person who moves permanently to a new country. Naturalization = A legal process to obtain citizenship. Deport = To send an alien or immigrant back to his or her own country.

Roger Sherman = Introduced the Great Compromise and set up a bicameral Congress. Federalists = Supporters of the constitution. Anti-Federalists = Those who opposed the ratification of the Constitution (until a Bill of Rights was added). Electoral College = A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the President.

Precedent = A ruling that is used as a basis for a judicial decision in a later, similar case. Natural Rights = Freedoms people possess relating to life, liberty, and property. Alien = A non-citizen. Three-Fifths Compromise = Said for every 5 slaves would count equivalent to 3 whites in a state’s population.
