Flashcards

Intensive Agriculture

A type of farming that uses minimal land but maximizes its use, focusing on high yields per unit area.

Study Notes

Types of Farming

  • Intensive agriculture uses maximum land
  • Extensive agriculture uses minimum land

Commercial Farming

  • Crops are grown for sale on large fields
  • Activities are mostly machine-driven
  • Three types: Commercial grain farming, Mixed farming, Plantation farming

Commercial Grain Farming

  • Crops grown for sale: Wheat, Maize
  • Practised in temperate grasslands (North America, Europe, Asia)
  • Large farms, machinery-driven

Mixed Farming

  • Crops and animals are raised on the same fields
  • Practised in Europe, Eastern USA, Argentina, South Eastern parts of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa

Plantation Farming

  • Large-scale farming of a single crop (e.g., banana, tea, coffee, rubber)
  • Similar to factory production (capital and labor intensive)
  • Processing factories are near plantations for efficient transport
  • Practised in Malaysia, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka

Primitive Subsistence Farming

  • Slash and burn agriculture (also called Ladang in Indonesia, Brazil, and Ray ut cultivation)
  • Cutting and burning land to create fertile soil for crops like maize.
  • Land loses fertility after one or two harvests

Nomadic Herding

  • Animals like goats, camels, and yaks are reared for milk, meat, wool, and skin
  • Seasonal migration for water and pasture

Intensive Subsistence Agriculture

  • Crops are grown on small fields with simple tools and human labor
  • Often grown more than once on the same field
  • Common in areas of dense population in monsoon countries (India, Bangladesh, Japan, etc.)
